After the establishment of Saidu Medical College in 1998 the Psychiatry unit was upgraded in to attaching unit which not only broadened its scope but also passed through a series of changes in terms of patient care, staffing, building renovation, academic and community services.
The exiting building was divided in to two portions. The ground floor consists of 20 beds, 10 each for male and female psychiatric patients. The 1st floor was converted into DATC with 20 beds for male patients only. The psychiatry unit consists of two wards, a demonstration room for medical students, two offices for staff and ECT room. DATC consist of two Chambers, a 10 beds detoxification ward and the other chamber used as occupational and recreational purposes.

Staffing:
Staff consist of head of the department, registrar, M.O, Paramedical and nursing staff.
Clinical and academic activities:
The department runs out patients services, a psycho-social and rehabilitation services. The OPD functions on filtration basis, the final consultancy being provided by the head of the department.
In door services are made according to the criteria as follows:-
- Serious patients and those who may be a threat to self or the community to resolve the diagnostic problems and academically important cases for the medical students.
- Medico legal and forensic purposes.
- Services are provided according to psychiatric protocols and consist of medications, psycho, therapeutic interventions and specialized treatment such as ECT.
- Medical students are allotted beds, imported skills in interviewing history taking and basic diagnostic tools. They are facilitated and encouraged to present the cases in daily morning rounds. Pre tests and post tests are also conducted to assess the capacity and capability of students before and after the ward duty respectively.
Community and collaboration activities:
The department regularly under take out reach and community services with a help of and collaboration with local NGOs and self help group. The medical officers also functions as co ordination community services.
Drug abuse treatment centre (DATC):
The DATC, 10 beds functional ward works on two aspects of treatment protocols.
- De toxification services
- Rehabilitation services.
The De-toxification services consist of a 10 day hospitalization in DATC where patients are managed under strict security system. During the 10 day stay patients are encouraged self control and to gain self confidence.
The social medical officer imparts religious and social lessons during the said period.
At the end of 10 days period patients are imparted good psychotherapy to initiate the process of rehabilitation in the community.
